Likely causes
- 1
Low transmission fluid level— Most likely
Check the fluid level first. On most JD tractors the transmission and rear axle share fluid — the dipstick is usually at the rear of the cab.
- 2
Worn transmission charge pump— Possible
The charge pump supplies low-pressure fluid for clutch engagement. Wear causes a gradual drop in charge pressure, often worse when the fluid is hot.
- 3
Clogged transmission suction strainer— Possible
The internal strainer can clog with debris, especially if fluid changes have been neglected. Requires dropping the sump to access.
- 4
Failed charge pressure sensor— Less common
The pressure sensor can fail and report low pressure when the actual pressure is fine. Confirm with a mechanical gauge before assuming the pump is faulty.
