John Deere Error Code ECU 000100.01 — What It Means and How to Fix It

Applies to: All modern JD tractor series (5E through 9RX), All combine series, All sprayer series, Construction and forestry equipment with JD PowerTech engines

STOP — Shut down the engine immediately

Shut down the engine NOW. Do not attempt to drive to a more convenient location. Check the dipstick before doing anything else.

JD ECU 000100.01John DeereManually verified

Engine Oil Pressure Extremely Low

The ECU is detecting that engine oil pressure has fallen below the minimum safe operating threshold. Running with low oil pressure will destroy bearings, score cylinder walls, and potentially seize the engine within minutes.

What to check first

  1. 1

Shut down immediately — wait 5 minutes for oil to drain back to the sump

  2. 2

Pull the dipstick, wipe, reinsert fully, pull again — is oil between the two marks?

  3. 3

Inspect oil condition: milky = coolant contamination (don't restart), metal flakes = bearing failure (don't restart), normal colour but low = top up and monitor

Likely causes

  1. 1

Low oil level (leak, consumption, or overdue oil change)Most likely

    DIY

Most common cause. Check dipstick immediately. Look for oil on the ground under the tractor.

  2. 2

Faulty oil pressure sensor or switchPossible

    DIY

If oil level is correct and oil looks normal, the sensor may have failed. A mechanical gauge plumbed into the port can verify actual pressure.

  3. 3

    Clogged oil filterPossible

    DIY

A severely clogged filter can restrict flow enough to trigger low pressure codes, especially on cold starts.

  4. 4

Oil pump wear (high-hour engines, 8,000+ hours)Less common

    Shop

Internal wear reduces pump output. Requires shop diagnosis and repair.

  5. 5

Worn main or rod bearingsLess common

    Shop

Excessive bearing clearance allows oil to escape faster than the pump can supply it. Major engine repair.

  6. 6

Fuel dilution thinning the oilLess common

    Shop

A leaking injector can wash fuel into the crankcase, thinning the oil. Oil analysis confirms this.

  7. 7

Coolant in oil (head gasket / liner seal failure)Less common

    Shop

Milky or frothy oil on the dipstick. Do NOT start the engine. Tow to shop.

Parts needed

Tools needed

  • Dipstick (built-in)
  • Oil drain pan (if changing filter)
  • Filter wrench
  • Funnel
  • Multimeter or mechanical pressure gauge (for sensor verification)

Pro tip

Keep a gallon of the correct oil on the tractor at all times. Checking the dipstick takes 30 seconds and can save you a $15,000+ engine rebuild. Do it every morning before you start.
