John Deere Error Code ECU 000174.16 — What It Means and How to Fix It

Applies to: All Tier 4 JD engines, 6R, 7R, 8R, 9R Series, S Series Combines

WARNING — Fuel running hot. Power derated.

Reduce engine load. Check the fuel cooler for blockage. Clean the cooler stack. Power will remain derated until fuel temperature drops.

JD ECU 000174.16John DeereManually verified

Fuel Temperature Above Normal Range

The fuel temperature sensor is reading above the acceptable range (typically above 65°C/149°F). Hot fuel loses viscosity and lubrication properties, which can damage the high-pressure fuel injection pump. The ECU derates power and disables power boost to protect the injection system.

What to check first

  1. 1

Reduce engine load and idle for 5 minutes to let fuel cool down

  2. 2

Check the fuel cooler (part of the radiator stack) for debris blockage — clean with compressed air or leaf blower

  3. 3

Check that the fuel return line isn't kinked or restricted — hot fuel needs to flow freely back to the tank

Likely causes

  1. 1

Radiator/cooler stack blocked with debrisMost likely

    DIY

Restricts airflow to the fuel cooler. Same fix as for overheating — clean the entire stack.

  2. 2

Extended heavy operation in high ambient temperaturesMost likely

    DIY

Running at maximum load in 40°C+ ambient for extended periods will consistently trigger this code. It's physics, not a fault.

  3. 3

    Fuel return line restrictionPossible

    DIY

A kinked or pinched return line prevents hot fuel from returning to the tank to cool.

  4. 4

Fuel cooler internally blocked or damagedLess common

    Shop

Requires removal and inspection. Shop recommended.

  5. 5

    Fuel temperature sensor faultLess common

    DIY

If everything else checks out and the fuel doesn't feel abnormally hot, the sensor may be reading incorrectly.

Tools needed

  • Leaf blower or compressed air
  • Infrared temperature gun (helpful for checking cooler performance)

Pro tip

If you consistently hit this code during hot-weather harvest, talk to your dealer about whether a fuel cooler upgrade kit is available for your model. Some operators also run shorter work stints with cooldown breaks in extreme heat.
