Likely causes
- 1
Low engine oil level— Most likely
Check the dipstick first. If oil is low, do not restart until topped up and the root cause of oil loss is found.
- 2
Failed oil pressure sensor— Possible
If oil level is correct, the sensor may have failed. Use a mechanical gauge to verify actual pressure before condemning the engine.
- 3
Worn oil pump— Possible
Common on very high-hour engines. Usually accompanied by low pressure at idle and increased pressure at higher RPM.
- 4
Blocked oil strainer or filter— Less common
If the oil filter has been overdue for change or the engine has seen contaminated oil, the strainer can block. Change the oil and filter, then check pressure.
