Likely causes
- 1
Low hydraulic fluid level— Most likely
Check the hydraulic sight glass or dipstick immediately. Low fluid is the most common cause and also points to a leak that needs fixing.
- 2
Worn or failing hydraulic pump— Possible
Pumps wear over time, especially if the fluid has been neglected. Low pressure that worsens under load is a strong sign of pump wear.
- 3
Stuck or worn hydraulic pressure relief valve— Possible
The relief valve can stick open, bleeding off pressure. This is a workshop repair — the valve is usually accessible without major disassembly.
- 4
Internal hydraulic leak (cylinder, valve body)— Less common
Cylinders and valve bodies can develop internal leaks. Usually identified by one implement losing power while others work fine.
