Massey Ferguson Error Code D 168 — What It Means and How to Fix It
Applies to: MF 7700 S Series (7714-7726), MF 8700 S Series (8727-8740), MF 5700 and 6700 Series
Check battery terminals first — clean and tighten. Check the alternator belt. If you see D 168 alongside multiple other codes, fix the voltage problem first — the other codes are symptoms.
Battery / Charging System Voltage Fault
The instrument panel controller has detected battery/charging voltage outside the expected range (below 11V or above 16V). This is critically important on MF 7700 and 8700 series tractors because a voltage problem can cascade secondary fault codes across engine, transmission, and hydraulic controllers.

What to check first
- 1
Check battery terminals — clean, tight, no corrosion? This is the cause half the time.
- 2
Check the alternator belt — tight, not slipping, not broken?
- 3
Measure voltage at battery: should be 13.5-14.5V engine running. Below 13V = alternator not charging.
Likely causes
- 1
Corroded or loose battery terminals— Most likely
DIYClean with a wire brush. Tighten firmly.
- 2
Loose or worn alternator belt— Possible
DIYCheck tension and condition.
- 3
Failing alternator or voltage regulator— Possible
ShopConfirm with voltage measurement before replacing.
- 4
Poor chassis/engine ground connection— Possible
DIYCheck engine-to-chassis ground strap.
- 5
Battery end of life (3-5 years typical)— Possible
DIYLoad test the battery.

Pro tip
If you see D 168 alongside multiple other codes from different systems, fix the voltage problem first. The other codes are almost certainly secondary symptoms, not independent faults. Don't let a dealer charge you to diagnose phantom faults caused by a $8 dirty terminal.
